Pan de Muerto is a cherished centerpiece of the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. This sweet, round bread is placed on ofrendas (altars) as an offering to nourish the souls of departed loved ones as they briefly return home.
The tradition itself is a beautiful blend of indigenous and European customs. While the pre-Hispanic cultures of Mesoamerica had offerings for the dead, the Spanish introduced wheat and the European baking tradition, which evolved into the Pan de Muerto we know today.
The bread's distinct shape is rich with symbolism:
It is a truly special pastry that embodies the heart of a celebration focused on love, remembrance, and the sweetness of life itself.

At Tany's Bakery, we honor this deeply meaningful tradition by baking our Pan de Muerto with a recipe that is rich in flavor and love. Our soft, tender brioche-like bread is lightly sweetened and exquisitely flavored with aromatic orange zest, evoking the scent of the cempasúchil (marigold) flowers used to guide the spirits home. Each loaf is carefully shaped with its symbolic "bones" and finished with a delicate dusting of either granulated sugar, Coconut, or sesame seeds. Perfect for Halloween, or placing on your ofrenda. Enjoying your Pan de Muerto with a warm cup of Tanys Mexican hot chocolate or Cafe Abuelita from our cafe menu.
Tany's Pan de Muerto is more than just a sweet treat—it's a taste of history and a heartfelt connection to those you hold dear. Stop by Tany's Bakery and Cafe today to savor this seasonal delicacy!
